Getting the information out

Once information has been encoded and stored in memory, it must be retrieved in order to be used. Memory retrieval is important in virtually every aspect of daily life, from remembering where you put your school bag, to learning new skills. Some things that may help:

  • Multiple-choice will help prompt your child’s memory.
  • Create daily ‘to do’ lists with photos or words for homework as well as for chores and self-care where necessary.
  • Create a checklist for what needs to be packed in the school bag to bring home. Put the checklists up in obvious places.

  • Try and keep items in a consistent place as this will increase the chance of independent recall over time. Consider what is really not necessary to store in memory e.g. allow the child to have the times tables in maths for reference. Make up rhymes, acronyms or crazy phrases to help remember things.
  • Use calendar and reminder functions on electronic devices.
