Now called self-limited epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (SeLECTS). This is a common focal epilepsy in childhood in which there may be infrequent seizures usually affecting one side of the face and may involve sensation changes, twitching, drooling and difficulty speaking. Often the child has awareness and these seizures tend to happen shortly after falling asleep (but can occur during wakefulness). Seizures tend to cease by age 15 or 16.
