Ski trip for teens

Each winter Epilepsy Action holds a ski camp for teenagers in the Snowy Mountains. Staying at the Apex Children’s Chalet at Smiggin Holes, the week-long camp is open to 13-16 year olds with epilepsy.

The aim of the trip is to give teenagers with epilepsy the opportunity to have a great time skiing in an open and caring atmosphere and to meet other teenagers with epilepsy.

Many find that learning and mastering a new and at times difficult skill such as skiing, gives an enormous boost to their self esteem. Also meeting others in a similar predicament helps them to share experiences. This newly found confidence in their own ability has been a turning point in many a young life.

The teenagers are well supervised with medical services readily accessible.

" The Smiggin Holes camp was great. It was the first week in September and it was very cold. We stayed in the Apex Lodge at the top of the hill. I got the chance to meet other kids with epilepsy. I felt very strange the first night. I didn't know anyone and I was 12 hours from home. I got used to it after a while."

"I had a fun time skiing and playing in the snow. In the afternoons and evenings we played table tennis and pool, watched TV and talked about epilepsy with the other kids. When I started talking about my epilepsy I didn't feel so bad anymore. Finally I was talking to kids who had the same thing and knew what I was talking about. Thank you Ann, Rhonda, Paul and Epilepsy Action."

- Brian

The camp is run in the August/September school holidays..
