The Epilepsy Association of Western Australia  www.epilepsywa.org.au

The partnership between Epilepsy Action, Australia and the Epilepsy Association of Western Australia is a groundbreaking step to improve services for the approximate 17,000 Western Australians with epilepsy.

As part of our National Services strategy, we have recently entered into a formal collaboration with the Epilepsy Association of Western Australia to provide comprehensive services to people living with epilepsy in WA.

Epilepsy Action service staff are based at the same location as the Epilepsy Association of Western Australia. The two organisations are working together to address the social isolation and the inequity of care of individuals with epilepsy in rural and regional Australia. We are planning a pilot program in Western Australia which will use videoconferencing to make services and support available to those in need.

The George Institute for International Health  www.thegeorgeinstitute.org

In 2007, Epilepsy Action Australia initiated a partnership with The George Institute for International Health that has lead to a major epidemiological research project. This study, Sydney Epilepsy Incidence Study to Measure Illness Consequences (SEISMIC) explores the incidence, psychosocial impact and household economic burden of epilepsy in a large population.

Epilepsy Action Australia have partnered with Livewire (livewire.org.au) which provides a free, safe and supportive online community for young people, aged over 10 and under 21, living with a serious illness, chronic health condition or disability. It’s a place for them to hang out, meet new friends, chat online, share experiences, creatively express themselves and know that they are not alone in their situation. Livewire also offers a community for siblings and shortly for parents or carers of people living with a chronic health condition.

Deloitte Australia  www.deloitte.com.au

Deloitte in Australia is a member of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, one of the world’s leading professional services organisations in the areas of audit, assurance and advisory, taxation, corporate finance and consulting.

To raise awareness and funds for Epilepsy Action, Deloitte Australia staff from the Assurance and Advisory division organised a charity challenge, which involved teams competing to raise the most funds. In addition, the Deloitte Foundation offered to match the first $2,000 raised.

The Deloitte teams showed their generosity and community spirit through a variety of fundraising activities, such as holding a silent auction, selling entertainment books and conducting raffles with great prizes.

The total money raised was a staggering $17,789.30, including the funds from the Deloitte Foundation. The money will help fund Epilepsy Action camps for children and youth with epilepsy. The camps allow participants to enjoy activities and make friends with others who have the same condition. The camps also focus on developing participants’ self confidence and many go on to build life-long friendships.
